How can you be raised from the dead? Jesus gives us six commands that will help lead you to revival! In Revelation 3:2-3 Jesus said, “Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.”

Jesus said to this church of zombies, “Wake up!” When we are spiritually dead, we need a slap in the face to awaken us. A splash of cold water. A sniff of ammonia. We need God’s alarm to go off. Jesus is saying, “Come out of your spiritual hibernation! Arouse yourself.” There must be an awareness that something is wrong. Honestly face your dullness. Admit to the dryness of your spiritual life. Catch a whiff of the reeking corruption of your death. Admit to God that something is missing. Admit it. You need a spiritual awakening!
In a revival service in Fairhope, Alabama I was preaching my heart out under a strong anointing of the Holy Ghost. As I was moving up and down the isle I got right in front of one of the deacons that was sound asleep. He instantly jerked his head back and loudly groaned. The entire congregation could here his gasp. He sounded like a whale surfacing for air. Since then, I’ve been more careful about whom I stop in front of while preaching in the isle. Those who are asleep in church need to wake up before they are called out by God.

Jesus says that they must “strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die.” It’s not enough just to wake up. This refers to the spiritual basics – Bible study, prayer, worship, and fellowship. Jesus is saying, “Get back into the Word! Get back into prayer! Get back into fellowship! Get back to the basics!” We must throw off the covers, get out of bed, get dressed and get with it! Perhaps you need to start a Bible reading plan or set aside more time in prayer. Strengthen what remains!

Jesus said, “Remember what you received and heard.” What had they received and heard at the beginning? The Gospel, the basic truths of Christian life. This is not a call to live in the past, but a command to remember their rich spiritual heritage in Christ. Jesus is saying here, “Remember how you were saved and how you were nothing before God found you. Remember how God’s grace reached down and redeemed you!”

Jesus goes on to say, “and keep it.” Christ is compelling them to obey God’s Word, to keep His commandments, in every area of their lives. Disobedience and spiritual dryness are twin sisters. Wherever you find one, you are sure to find the other. Jesus is saying, “Weave God’s truth through every area of your life. Keep the Word! Put it into practice.” Where God has put a period, don’t put a question mark. Partial obedience is still disobedience, it’s merely convenience. Get back to fully obeying God’s Word.

Jesus says, finally, “Repent.” This calls for an immediate decision to turn around and come back to Christ with all one’s heart. Repentance calls for a quick and decisive change of thought, devotion, and behavior. In calling for repentance, Jesus is saying, “Confess your sin of spiritual lethargy. Turn away from it. Do an immediate about face! Change your life and return to full devotion to Christ! Repentance means to let go of our sins. That’s a choice that each of us must make. All to often we want to hang onto the world. We risk the truly valuable because we will not let go of our sin. We must turn loose of sin if we are to turn our lives around.

What if they don’t repent? Jesus warns that He will come like a thief to any church that will not wake up and get with it! This is not a reference to the second coming of Christ. It points to a sudden coming of Christ to judge this church. To remove their lampstand. To discipline them. If they do not repent, Jesus will come like a thief. Unexpectedly. Unannounced. To steal what is valuable – whatever ministry opportunity remains.
Jesus threatens to deal so harshly with this church because nothing holds back the spread of the Gospel like a dead, lifeless church. Persecution causes the church to grow. But spiritual deadness is like malignant cancer that spreads to the whole body. It renders the church impotent, ineffective, and inactive. A dry church will do more to harm the cause of Christ than almost anything else. It is a sin to bore people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Finally, Jesus commends this church in Revelation 3:4, “But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white; for they are worthy.” There were a few that were still spiritually vibrant, alive and awake in their faith. This core group had abstained from moral impurity and not compromised with the world. They had not grown comfortable with the godless culture. They were walking in moral purity. They refused to soil their garments with the world’s filth. Because they had not yielded to temptation, Jesus promises to replace their human garments with specially prepared white robes. In which group do you find yourself? Are you the larger group that is spiritually dead? Or a part of the committed core? Are you a part of your church’s problem? Or a part of the solution? Are you a pillar in your church? Or a caterpillar that just crawls in and out? Remain true to God, escaping the world’s pollution. Live holy and righteous lives, not loving the things of the world. Make a determination today that while the masses in the church have been lulled to sleep, you are going to remain spiritually awake and alert.

Please pray for our soldiers defending America in the war on terror. Every 12-18 months the U.S. rotates our troops in and out of the Middle East region. Revival Fires has made it a top priority to provide a Bible for all of our soldiers, especially in harms way. We have given more than 250,000 Bibles to our soldiers up to this point.

Please pray for our revival services as we travel across America. We are seeing more people give their hearts to Christ, being filled with the Spirit, healed, delivered and set of fire for God, than in 30 years of full time evangelistic ministry. God is doing everything but making the decision for people. Thank you for praying for anointing. Pray for spiritual, physical, emotional and financial strength. Pray for open doors.
